Alfred was born in Wessex, a kingdom in what is now England.

His father, Aethewulf, was the king of Wessex. England was made

up of different kingdoms during this time, and they all faced

a big threat. A group of Vikings, called the Danes, had landed

in England to steal the riches of the different kingdoms.

When the Danes reached Wessex, Alfred helped lead the

army of Wessex against the Danes. When his father and his four

elder brothers died, Alfred became king, and it was his job

to protect Wessex.
